iPhone 14 coming in four models without ‘mini’ version, Pro models with taller screen

Apple recently announced new iPhone 13 models, but work on the iPhone 14 has already begun. While the new models would have different CPUs, we also learned that due to the new design, the iPhone 14 Pro models would have a larger screen, and that Apple is still working on satellite services.

iPhone 14 details

According to early iPhone 14 speculations, Apple’s smartphone portfolio in 2022 will include four new models, but no “small” variant. The next iPhone 14 (codenamed D27 and D28) will be offered in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes, with the existing 5.4-inch iPhone small model being phased out, according to our sources.

These mid-range phones will have the same display resolution as the existing iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The premium iPhones 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max (codenamed D73 and D74) may have significantly taller displays to accommodate the new “notch + pill” design that will replace the notch.

Concerning the chip issue, 9to5Mac sources confirm that two new iPhone 14 models will use the A15 chip, while two others will use a completely new technology. It’s worth noting that Apple currently has two A15 processors, one of which includes an extra GPU core and 6GB of RAM (used in 13 Pro models).

As 9to5Mac has learned from sources, the high-end version of Apple’s A15 Bionic CPU could be used in the entry-level iPhone 14 models, as all of this year’s iPhones will include 6GB of RAM. The processor could even be rebranded as “A15X,” as Apple did with the A12Z chip in the 2020 iPad Pro, which is essentially the A12X chip with an additional GPU core.

The Apple Watch Series 7 has the same CPU as the Apple Watch Series 6, but due to minor internal SoC changes, the chips are referred to as “Apple S6” and “Apple S7.”

Satellite features

According to some sources, Apple was working on satellite communication technologies for future iPhone models a few weeks before the iPhone 13 was unveiled. Although these technologies were never included in the iPhone 13 series, sources told 9to5Mac that Apple is still working on satellite communication for the iPhone.

Although it is unclear whether the technology will be ready for the iPhone this year, Apple has been testing prototypes that can send text messages via satellite. Internally, the system is referred to as “Stewie.”
